Why Marauding Stars?

Just watch the news and you’ll see the obvious. People are afraid of many things that have — or will be — developed. It isn’t just technology, though. People have become afraid of people. With fear comes closed-minded tribalism. We see it now in our politics, our discussions with others, our attitudes toward the world.

As a publishing and media company, we saw the market potential in a book series about those fears.

Hence, the Marauding Stars series. Beginning with the first book, Kali Rises, the reader will encounter society’s fears of:

Artificial Intelligence
Nuclear weapons
Authoritarian governments
Economic inequities
Financial system collapse
Critical resource shortages
Climate change (or as Marcus Kenzie views it, Global Warming)
Engineered pandemic
Genetic testing and modification

We at Stellar Nursery Media have found talented science fiction writers who can integrate those fears into a single galaxy-spanning series of books. Yet that’s what science fiction writers do, right?

The challenge was to get these writers to include current and developing space science. They looked at different fields like 3D printing of rocket engines, aeroponic farming, quantum computing and sentient artificial intelligence. The reader will find real hard science in every book of the series.

Diane had only recently come to accept the possibility something – someone – like Peg could exist. Yet the situation the voice was describing, the conclusion every photo and document on her desk pointed toward… her mind simply refused to accept it could happen. Asking her to prepare and launch two rockets with crew in response to the unbelievable was beyond her ability to contemplate. “Do you know the position you’re putting me in here? I can’t just—”

“Then let me simplify the decision for you, Director.”

The phone and hallway intercoms suddenly burst into life. An older male voice sounded throughout the building, his words saturated with pain.

“Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is retired Master Chief Petty Officer Jason Cobbler onboard Earth Station. I am an employee of Stellar Nursery. To all craft boarding this station, stop your assault. We are unarmed. I say again, we are unarmed.”

Static was broken by an occasional sound like whistling wind. Then the voice returned again, gasping and growing weaker. “Mayday, Mayday, Mayday. This is Earth Station. We are under attack by unknown forces. There are heavy casualties. To any ship within range, we require immediate assistance.”

The voice was barely a whisper. “Mayday, Mayday, May….”

The intercoms fell silent.

Of course, science fiction writers often have a warped sense of humor. That’s why our company name — Stellar Nursery — plays a role in the storyline. We can forgive that because they’ve created incredibly believable characters, unique applications of current space tools and technology, and a cautionary tale of our current society.
